Why Is Coinbase Bringing Back the Wallet Name? Coinbase is reversing last year's Base App rebrand and restoring the Coinbase Wallet name as the self-custodial product shifts away from its earlier social ambitions and toward trading, multichain access and new onchain financial products. The wallet now supports more than 10 networks, including Base, Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin, BNB Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche, Robinhood Chain and Monad. Robinhood Chain and Monad are among the newer additions as Coinbase broadens the app beyond its own Base ecosystem. Coinbase says the Wallet name better reflects the product's current role as a self-custodial entry point into a wider range of onchain markets. Ryan Kass, Head of Coinbase Wallet Product, described the app as a "test kitchen" for products and assets that may not initially be available through Coinbase's centralized exchange. The first example is perpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid. The wallet also supports prediction markets and tokenized stocks, while Coinbase plans to continue adding networks and long-tail assets as they become available. "The Coinbase Wallet name better captures the product's role as Coinbase's self-custodial front door to the 'everything exchange,'" Kass said. "While Base app was an opinionated experiment, Coinbase Wallet gives users access to all of onchain finance." What Changed From the Base App Strategy? Coinbase renamed Coinbase Wallet as the Base App in July 2025, presenting it as an "everything app" combining social networking, messaging, payments, mini-apps and trading. That strategy did not develop as planned. CEO Brian Armstrong said in March that the social experiment "didn't quite work," while Base creator Jesse Pollak later acknowledged that some social and creator features had fallen short. Leadership of the app was transferred to Jordan "Cobie" Fish in July as Coinbase moved toward a more trading-focused strategy. Pollak also said the product would become less Base-centric as it expanded into a broader trading platform. The return to the Coinbase Wallet name therefore formalizes a pivot that had already been underway. Rather than trying to turn the wallet into a social platform built primarily around Base, Coinbase is positioning it as a multichain trading interface that can expose users to products earlier than its regulated centralized exchange.
