Canopy Ships Banyan Protocol Upgrade Live, With No Downtime

Canopy has announced it completed its first named protocol upgrade, Banyan (v2.0), live and with no downtime. The company, which builds a framework for launching onchain apps and sovereign blockchains, ran a network-wide consensus change through its Canopy Auto Update feature. The headline is not only the technical feat: according to Canopy, the same in-place upgrade ability now belongs to every application built on its infrastructure. That is the real point behind the announcement. Once code is live on a blockchain, changing it is both difficult and risky. By design, smart contracts are immutable: to ship a real change, you deploy a new version and migrate users, or you use complex proxy contracts. This constraint is well known to developers: any change, in principle, requires deploying a new contract. As a result, most onchain apps change as little as possible, as rarely as possible, to the point where you can often count their versions on one hand. That is precisely what Canopy says it wants to flip with Canopy Auto Update: make upgrading routine instead of rare. What is Canopy, and who is it for? Canopy presents itself as an agent-native development framework for launching sovereign onchain apps and dedicated blockchains. The idea: condense complex application infrastructure into readable code (the company cites roughly 200 lines) so that developers, but also AI agents and non-technical founders, can design, deploy and evolve a complete application in a single session.
