DeFi Is Unbundling the Exchange as Trading Infrastructure Goes Modular

For years, decentralized exchanges largely competed on one question: where could traders find the most liquidity? That still matters, but it isn’t enough anymore. Traders now expect limit orders, automated strategies, smarter routing, gasless transactions, and more sophisticated execution alongside basic token swaps. That shift is quietly changing how decentralized exchanges get built. Instead of every platform developing its entire trading stack in-house, more of the functionality surrounding a trade is becoming specialized infrastructure that sits on top of existing liquidity. DeFi, in other words, is beginning to unbundle the exchange. A DEX Is Becoming More Than a Liquidity Pool The first generation of automated market makers solved a fundamental problem for decentralized finance: they proved users could trade assets directly through smart contracts without a centralized order book. That put liquidity at the center of DEX design, since deeper pools generally meant better pricing and lower slippage. But liquidity alone isn’t a complete trading experience. A trader may want to execute only once an asset hits a certain price, spread a large order over several hours to reduce market impact, or trade without holding a separate gas balance. Centralized exchanges have long built this directly into the platform. In DeFi, it’s harder, since execution can involve multiple smart contracts, wallets, liquidity pools, and blockchain networks at once, and that complexity is what’s creating space for a dedicated infrastructure layer. Trading Functionality Is Becoming Modular Modularity is already one of the defining trends in blockchain infrastructure, with different layers specializing in execution, settlement, or data availability instead of one network handling everything. A similar shift is now playing out in decentralized trading. A DEX doesn’t need to build every advanced trading function internally. Specialized infrastructure can handle routing, order automation, and execution while the exchange focuses on the interface and access to liquidity. Aggregation was an early version of this: rather than relying on a single liquidity pool, aggregators such as 1inch built infrastructure that scans across venues for better execution paths. More recently, intent-based systems have pushed the idea further, letting users express the outcome they want and leaving the infrastructure underneath to figure out how to execute it. Advanced Orders Are Becoming Infrastructure Limit orders, stop losses, and time-weighted execution look like simple features from a trader’s point of view, but building them onchain is a lot more complicated. A protocol needs infrastructure that can monitor whether execution conditions have been met, identify available liquidity, submit transactions, and make sure the trade behaves as intended, and those requirements only grow as strategies get more sophisticated. This is the space where projects like Orbs are positioning themselves.
